I was chatting with my friend Daisy, who acts as my makeup/blog coach (she basically tells me what to write about and what to wear so I don't have to think about these things all the time) and this time, I demanded that she give me some topics to write about, as I was in need of desperate inspiration. While I talk a lot about perfume, Daisy doesn't actually wear perfume, and so I think that led her to suggest that I do a makeup tag, similar to the perfume one I did recently. I did do a search for some makeup tags that are already out there, but I wasn't really feeling the ones I looked at. So I made this one!
1. What is the first makeup item you remember owning?
Outside of fistfulls of Lip Smackers that I had as a kid (damn, those things were addictive) and makeup purchased for school plays, the very first makeup that was bought for me (because I didn't have allowance at the time - I think I was in between allowance time periods then) was a tube of Maybelline Great Lash and a tube of Maybelline Shiny-Licious lip gloss in #90 Melon Ball. I got two more of the glosses in Berry Bella and Strawberry Tart. Damn, I miss those glosses. They were discontinued ages ago. Sadly, Great Lash is still trucking on, mystifying everyone.
I remember my youngest brother didn't like that I was wearing mascara. He was eight years old, and my mother explained to him that I was getting older and makeup was going to happen. My youngest brother remains a crotchety soul today, 18 going on 75.
2. What's the makeup item that makes the least sense to you?
There are lots of things that make no sense to me for me, but I guess the one thing that grinds my gears is the contouring palettes that have popped up...as things for non-makeup artists to have. I guess if you do your friends' makeup all the time, but then I would just tell them to bring foundation and a contour product that worked with their skin because I'm not keeping stuff around for the few times I do their makeup compared to the every day that I do mine. I don't know. I don't get it. Maybe if you tan?
3. What category of products do you hate shopping for? Love shopping for?
I find brow products so boring that I don't shop for them at all, outside of my yearly purchase of clear mascara for brow gel. I am blessed to have pretty good brows, though. I also find mascara kind of boring, though I'm always trying new ones. Finding the perfect mascara is a tedious quest.
While I do love shopping for eyeshadow, since I've been trying to curb acquisitions in that area, I've turned my attention to buying lip products. I don't have many lipsticks, so I've been slowly dipping my toes in there, and I've also been exploring quality indie and mid-range to high-end lip tints, glosses, and everything else.
4. What products are you currently lusting after?
I really want to see what colours Kae Q will be releasing in the Beso balms in June. I also want to try some of Limnit's lipsticks, despite my anti-matte stance (this will pass). Portland Black Lipstick's Imitation Cherry is calling my name as well. Korres has some tinted lip butter sticks on Sephora's website, but they're online only and I refuse to order from their website, so that one will be quietly dropped too. I also want Zoeva brushes to replace all of my non-Zoeva brushes because I love the ones I have. I'd probably do my eyeshadow more if I had all Zoeva brushes to do it with (possibly not true, but I'm willing to make the sacrifice to find out).
5. What's your most recent makeup purchase?
I'm technically on a no buy right now, but this has been a gifting time of year, and I also broke my no buy a little bit a couple of weeks ago for some HelloWaffle. The last thing that I actually did the work of obtaining was MAC Viva Glam VI and MAC Huggable lip colour in Fashion Force.
6. Do you have any brand loyalties? Why?
Kind of. I buy from a lot of brands. There are products that I will not buy alternatives of, so I guess I have some brand loyalties. But I'm not a devotee to any specific brand, at least not like the way I am with perfume. If something looks cool from a brand, and I can spare the cash, I'll buy it.
7. What is your biggest makeup packaging pet peeve?
Where do I start? I hate anything that attracts fingerprints, or anything that gets gross fast (velvety packaging, cardboard, NARS black rubber). I hate tiny labels on products. I can't stand anything that requires a lip brush to use (OCC Lip Tars are not on my list of things to ever use). I despise anything that smacks of a gimmick.
8. What colours do you buy most often?
Peachy pinks. For lips, for cheeks, for eyes...I want everything to be peachy pink, I guess. I would buy it for nails too, but I wore a peachy pink polish every day for a year in middle school and I got so sick of it that more than ten years later, I still can't bring myself to put that colour family on my nails. But everywhere else is fair game.
If you want to borrow this tag, please feel free to do so. I'm not going to tag anyone specifically, just anyone who wants to do it. You can also leave your answers in the comments if you don't have anywhere/feel like making a blog post about it.
