Empties of Note: Spring/Summer 2015

Here it is, the first empties post of random empties that I felt like complaining writing about. I've been diligently emptying things now for a while, and I wanted to only write about interesting things. No one cares if I finish yet another NARS concealer stick, which I have been using solidly since 2011. But if I finish something new? Or decide to toss something new? These are the important things.

I'm also doing it now so I can toss this basket of empties. It's kind of weird, if you think about it, to hold onto this garbage. And I'm most definitely not moving them, so into the blogosphere they go.

Simple Cleansing Micellar Water

I saw some very positive reviews for this one, comparing it to my beloved Bioderma. Which would have been great since Bioderma is $$$ and I have student loans to pay off (so the student life must prevail for now).

It's not a suitable replacement for Bioderma, mainly because it says "Avoid getting in your eyes" on the bottle and the whole reason I use micellar water is to get off my eye makeup. Also it wasn't nearly as effective as Bioderma. Sigh.

After I fell in love with Benefit Roller Lash, I determined that I was still not willing to buy the full tube. They hadn't yet released a travel size for purchase, so I returned to the drugstore to find a vaguely suitable replacement until they did. I hated everything I tried. The Maybelline was wet and gloopy and had a meh brush, the Covergirl was flaky as all get out; and the Rimmel (not pictured because I threw it out because I hated it SO MUCH) smelled like fake cucumber and had a giant brush of doom.

Fortunately, Roller Lash is now out in travel sizes, plus I scored a tube with points at Sephora. I'm also trying out Clinique Chubby Lash Fattening Mascara in Black Honey, which is also pretty good.

Fresh Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask

I got this as part of a points perk at Sephora (I still had a whole whack of point from that time when my BI card and my online account were two separate things and I called to get them merged and apparently that meant I deserved a few hundred extra points. The thing about Fresh is that I actually like most of the stuff I've tried from them but would never pay for it. This particular mask is $108. Hahahahaha no.

As it turns out, this mask broke me out like crazy. It also smelled vaguely of pickles. Not good.

Haus of Gloi hair oil in Imp

I'm a regular user of Haus of Gloi hair oils, so the fact that I finished yet another one is not that exciting. Even the fact that it's the second one in Imp I've used is only vaguely interesting. No, the reason that I'm talking about this one is because my partner decided to grow out his beard and hair this summer and started using my hair oil some more. The day after I finished this one and pulled out another, this time in Zazz, he texted me from work to tell me he didn't like Zazz as much as he liked Imp and that I should just buy Imp next time. Okay, then.

Tarte Tarteguard 30

I got this using a coupon code at It's got a nice texture, doesn't leave a white cast, has a light, pleasant scent...but is only SPF 30. That's not going to fly for my pale face, so I ended up using it on my partner, who seems to have a weird aversion to sunscreen anyway.

Essence Lash & Brow Gel Mascara

I tend to buy a clear mascara and then use it for a year or so, until I get tired of looking at the cloudy clear gel in the tube, from picking up bits of BB cream while sweeping the wand over my brows. I don't think this one held my brows as well as Maybelline Great Lash clear mascara, so I think I'll just cough up the extra few dollars and buy the Maybelline one from now on.

My Beauty Diary sheet masks in Apple Polyphenol and Black Pearl

I got these as part of a gift. I remember really liking both of these - getting glowy, nice skin from both, but I'm thinking I might switch from sheet masks to using an essence. I haven't decided yet. But should I decide to keep with sheet masks, I'm definitely ordering some boxes of these.

Lip Balms

So many lip balms, so little time. I've been spending this year focusing on getting my pile of balms to a reasonable state (which has finally happened!). The Ten Three salve stick was okay, though it got a bit grainy around the end. I found Mielo to get a bit melty in my incredibly warm apartment, which made it better for a night balm. I have one of the infused Mielos in my backup pile, and would purchase again.

HelloWaffle's Wafflebalm is the star of the lip balms, though. It's successfully knocked Haus of Gloi balms out of first place. It's firm but glides well, moisturizes nicely, and goes well under a variety of products. I have a backup one to open.

I just opened this Haus of Gloi balm, but it smells super waxy. Life is too short to use a lip balm that has a less than optimal scent.

Sixteen92 Hand & Body Lotion in Red Velvet Hot Chocolate

This particular lotion was a gift, but I've used the formula before and liked it a lot. I was surprised at how much I liked the Red Velvet scent - super realistic and very, very yummy. Probably better suited for winter but whatever, cake is good.

Haus of Gloi Bubbling Scrub in Cozy Sweater

My love of Cozy Sweater is well-documented. IT'S SO GOOD.

In the past, I've been pretty meh on scrubs. They're too gritty or oily or too something. But I love the bubbling scrub. I think because it's soap + sugar, and so I actually feel like I'm getting clean instead of rubbing a bag of sugar on my foot. Have already repurchased, albeit in a different scent.

Good-bye, empties!

  1. I'm surprised the cleansing water says to not get near eyes. I thought they were all purpose. The Tarte sunscreen is on my to try list for general use. I'm supposed to wear a minimum of SPF to go outside. It's also too light SPF for me for festivalling or going outside in the sun for long periods of time.

    1. The sad part is, I didn't realize it wasn't safe for eyes until I'd used about half of the bottle and got a bit in my eye and it stung a tiny bit. It wasn't very effective at removing eyeliner or mascara anyway, which was disappointing.

2018 Reads: October to December

I DID IT! I read 52 books in 2018. However, I didn't really do what I set out to do, which was to learn to enjoy reading again at a more...
